The Professional Engineer in Illinois | Professional Development | Students and Youth

Learn more about the NEW PE Education proposal!

"Citing the gradual decrease in the number of credits required for an undergraduate engineering degree, from 150 in recent decades down to 128 currently, NCEES is calling for an additional 30 hours of post-graduate work in order to qualify for the licensure examination.  The current plan is for these changes to take effect in 2015."

         - Kim Robinson, Executive Director of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers, in

                   Illinois Engineer magazine, Winter 2006

The Professional Engineer

The term “professional engineer” carries with it distinction – distinction earned by rigorous education and training, the highest of professional standards, an assurance of dedication to public safety and welfare, and a commitment to excellence.

Professional Engineers carry out a wide range of functions - from designing bridges, to splitting atoms; from developing new compounds to making the internet run faster.

Becoming a professional engineer takes a commitment to education both in the classroom and beyond.

Professional Development

The State of Illinois implemented a new Professional Development (continuing education) requirement for all Illinois PE's in December, 2003. This program new requirement is implemented through the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation.

All PE’s must earn 30 professional development hours within the current 2-year renewal period, with one Professional Development Hour equaling 50 minutes of presentation/classroom time.
