8:00 A - 9:00 A

Launching Leaders - General Session
Sponsored by: University of Wisconsin - Platteville

This opening session will provide engineers with an overview of the convention, as well as an education session focusing on professional engineers and leadership.  U.S. Astronaut Scott Altman has been invited to speak.  His participation is still pending.

9:10 A - 11:00 A  (You will be asked to Select One)

Session 9-A - The Entrepreneurial Engineer (2 PDHs)

Sponsored by: College of Engineering, University of Illinois

Speaker:  Professor David E. Goldberg, PhD - Department of General Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Today's world is radically networked, fast-paced, and full of opportunity, but to be successful in these times, engineers need to master a broad array of personal, interpersonal, organizational, and business skills.  This talk starts by pointing out key differences between yesterday's Cold War engineer and today's entrepreneurial engineer.  It continues by examining the tug of war for the engineer's mind and how to find joy in engineering study and work.  This lead to an examination of the role of engagement in matching personal interested to a life of fulfilling work. The talk concludes by explaining a key pattern or template that lead to clearer, more effective business writing and presentation.

Session 9-B -The IDOT Red Book and other Specifications Updates (2PDHs)

Sponsored by:  Civiltech Enginering Inc.

Speaker:  Michael Brand, PE - Illinois Department of Transportation

IDOT trainer, specification expert, and Red Book coordinator Michael Brand, PE will bring attendees up to speed with the latest changes in the bible of the transportation world, the IDOT Red Book, and other key changes you should be aware of when doing your transportation designs and layouts.

11:10 A - 1:00 P   (You will be asked to Select One)

Session 11-A - The Engineer & Leadership Maturity (2 PDHs)

Sponsored by:  Frontline Public Strategies

Speaker:  Dennis R. Pescitelli, PE - New Insight Associates
The word maturity is defined as “fully developed in body or mind, as a person.” But what does fully developed mean, particularly with regard to leadership? Emerging models of leadership address the delicate task of balancing our conflicting and very human drives for autonomy and connection. They also suggest finding balance in different aspects of our life: intellectual, emotional, moral, and spiritual. Other models, operating from the same premise suggest “leadership wheels” similar to the medicine wheels of native cultures in the Americas.

This thought-provoking workshop will present useful, practical interpretations for engineers of these emerging views of leadership. Interactive exercises and development of personal action plans will demonstrate their utility for engineers and technical professionals.

Session 11-B - Latest Advances in Geotechnical Engineering (2 PDHs)

Sponsored by: Frauenhoffer & Associates

Speaker:  Scott M. Olson, PhD, PE - Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Today geotechnical engineers are seeing tremendous advances in the tools that we have at our disposal for site investigation, soil characterization, laboratory testing, design and analysis, foundations, ground improvement, retaining structures, geosynthetics, instrumentation, and others - many of which are a result of the on-going IT revolution. In this session, Professor Olson will compare and contrast the "old" tools with recently available, or coming soon, "new" tools of our profession.

Session 11-C - GeoThermal Engineering  (2 PDHs)

Sponsored by:  Illinois Mechanical Contractors Association

Speaker:  John P. "Jack" DiEnna, Jr. - Geotherm Heat Pump Consortium

In this session, explore the issue of geothermal heat pumps, what they are, why they are used, what they do, and how to be more proficient in designing for their use.

2:10 P - 4:00 P  (You will be asked to Select One)

Session 2-A - Values Centered Leadership for Engineers (2 PDHs)

Speaker:  Dennis R. Pescitelli, PE - New Insight Associates
In today's world, engineers are perceived as "the bashful profession" -- preferring to be led rather than lead.  Over the past two decades, they often have slowly but consistently ceded societal leadership roles to other professions, such as lawyers, business administrators, and even architects.   What keeps engineers from assuming more active leadership roles in their organizations, their communities, and the national stage?  Are there leadership models that engineers can use to reclaim their tradition as a high profile profession deserving the respect of society, and having an impact both inside and outside the technical domain?

This workshop presents the Higher Grown Leadership Model developed by the Secretan Center, a leadership development think-tank headed by international expert and author, Dr. Lance Secretan.  Explore Dr. Secretan's CASTLE Principles, as set of universal noble values that form the core of emerging new models of effective leadership.  Discover how these values and principles can be put to use in all facets of your career, and how they can contribute to a newly invigorated role for engineers.

Session 2-B - Signal Improvements & Red Light Running Reduction (2 PDHs)

Sponsored by: Coombe-Bloxdorf, P.C.

Speaker:  Robert K. Seyfried, PE, PTOE - Director - Transportation Safety Division - Northwestern University
Bob Seyfried of Northwestern University Center for Public Safety will share approaches for engineering countermeasures, including signal improvements and modifications, to reduce the likelihood of red-light-running.

Session 2-C - DeReg & the Future of Energy in Illinois - Panel Discussion (2 PDHs)

This panel representing leaders from the Illinois General Assembly - Energy & Environment Committee, the Illinois Commerce Commission, and the Energy Production Energy share their thoughts on Utility De-Regulation and future direction of energy production and distribution in Illinois.

4:10 P - 5:00 P    (You will be asked to Select One)

Session 4-A - Risk Drivers:  Understanding the Dynamics of Risk (1 PDH)

Speaker:  Paula Dixon - Holmes Murphy

This seminar demonstrates how the A/E and professional liability industries interrelate.  The seminar also explores the technical and non-technical causes of claims.

Session 4-B - Green Buildings & the Children's Discovery Museum (1 PDH)

Speaker:  - Farmsworth & Associates

This session uses the Normal Children's Discovery Museum as an example of Green Building techniques and their practical application in design and construction.

Session 4-C -E-85:  Alternative Fuel in Illinois (1 PDH)

Speaker:  David Loos - Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Development

Session 2-A - Project Collaborative Writing for Professional Engineers (1.5 PDH)

Sponsored by:  Member Media

Speaker:  Claire Lamonica - Illinois State University

Research suggests (and experience confirms) that the majority of workplace writing is collaborative. Think about your proposals, design specifications, field studies, presentations, etc.

Until recently, however, schools rarely taught students how to write collaboratively. In this interactive session we will draw on participants' own collaborative writing experiences--good and bad--to identify strategies for making collaborative writing experiences more productive and less stressful for engineers who don't typically think of themselves as writers.

Session 2-B - Self-Consolidating Concrete (1.5 PDH)

Sponsored by:  Maurer-Stutz, Inc.

Speaker:  Illinois Ready Mixed Concrete Association

Self-Consolidating Concrete (SCC) is a very fluid, non-segregating mix that is able to fill every part and corner of framework with minimal effort, even if the presence of dense reinforcement.  As a result, SCC requires no vibration for consolidation and can maximize the structural integrity, durability, and aesthetics of in-place concrete.   In this session, explore the ins and outs of SCC with industry experts.

Session 2-C Indoor Air Quality (1.5 PDH)

Speaker:  Brad Iverson - Invensys

Description to follow.

In the event that a scheduling conflict arises with a speaker, ISPE reserves the right to replace the topic listed above with another session.  Registrants will be able to choose an alternative session on-site under those circumstances.
